France have not had a problem finding good players for a decade. The question after every tournament is which of them fit together, and the squad named on 18 September 2026 answers it with a hard reset at the edges and no change at the centre. Kylian Mbappé keeps the captaincy and the number 10. Zinedine Zidane, appointed in July and under contract to the 2030 World Cup, called up five players who had never been capped and left out several who were part of the last tournament group. What follows is a role-by-role reading of those 23 players: how the units balance, who is actually worth watching, what the new staff has changed, and which France shirt makes sense for the way you watch.

Zidane named 23 players, and the midfield is the bet
Zinedine Zidane named 23 players in his first squad as France head coach, for the opening window of the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League: three goalkeepers, eight defenders, six midfielders and six forwards. That is a back line two deep in every position and a midfield with exactly two spare bodies — the tightest unit in the squad, and the one that decides how much of this team France can rotate without changing how it plays.
| Unit | In the squad | Who is in it | What this unit decides |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goalkeepers | 3 | Mike Maignan, Guillaume Restes, Robin Risser | The one settled position: Maignan has 48 caps, the two under-22s behind him have none |
| Defenders | 8 | Andy Diouf, Jérémy Jacquet, Pierre Kalulu, Ibrahima Konaté, Jules Koundé, Maxence Lacroix, Adrien Truffert, Dayot Upamecano | How high France can defend: the deepest unit in the squad, and the one carrying two uncapped players |
| Midfielders | 6 | Eduardo Camavinga, Rayan Cherki, Lucas Da Cunha, Manu Koné, Adrien Rabiot, Warren Zaïre-Emery | Where matches are controlled — and the only unit where one injury changes the balance of the team |
| Forwards | 6 | Bradley Barcola, Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, Esteban Lepaul, Kylian Mbappé, Michael Olise | Whether France stretch a defence or beat it one-on-one: four of the six can play wide |
Squad references follow the 23-man list announced by the French Football Federation on 18 September 2026 for the opening window of the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League. Ages and heights are stated as of 26 September 2026 and caps as listed at that announcement. One change has since been reported: Warren Zaïre-Emery withdrew through injury and Maghnes Akliouche was called up in his place.
The midfield count is the real change, and it is worth understanding before you watch. Six midfielders for three starting shirts means at least three of them are on the bench in any given match, and only Rabiot is over 25. When one of the three is rested or suspended, a 20-year-old or a debutant steps into the most demanding role on the pitch — which is exactly how national teams get caught out in a window that runs to four matches instead of two.
Two other things about the list, in one line each. Thirteen of the 23 players are 25 or younger, and the average age of the group is 25. Adrien Rabiot and Mike Maignan, both 31, are the only players in their thirties — and Rabiot is the only outfielder who is.
France begin the Zidane era with a 23-man squad named on 18 September 2026: one fixed point in Kylian Mbappé, five debutants around him, and several big names left out.
- Start with the captain. Mbappé is 27, has 106 caps and is the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history with 22 goals — and the new staff kept him as captain.
- Then watch who feeds him. Ousmane Dembélé (67 caps) and Michael Olise are the two senior creators, with Rayan Cherki and Bradley Barcola as the alternatives in the same corridors.
- Then look at the risk. Five uncapped players came in, and the midfield is now the least experienced part of the group — see the full squad breakdown in National Teams.

Who are the France players to watch?
Three groups, three reasons to watch — and they are not equal. The captain is the fixed point the attack is arranged around. The supply line is the pair of senior creators who decide whether he gets the ball in dangerous places. The new middle is where the squad is closest to a question mark. Start with the first, because everything else is built to serve it.
Kylian Mbappé · forward, 27. The fixed point of the whole team, and the only player in the squad whose role is not up for discussion: 106 caps, 66 international goals at 27, and the all-time record for World Cup goals with 22. He starts every meaningful match, and the shape is built so that he receives the ball as close to the box as possible — which is why the interesting question is never whether he plays, but where the ball finds him.
Watch the first ten minutes for that and nothing else. When France get him the ball on the half-turn between the centre-back and the full-back, the defence is already turned and the whole team can push up. When he instead receives with his back to goal on the touchline, the move slows down and the wide players have to hold their positions longer. Same player, two very different teams — and the difference is created by whoever is playing behind him.

France2026-2027 Away Shirt (Upamecano 4)Fan edition · Away · 2026-27 · International · MenSee the Upamecano 4 away shirtMichael Olise · winger, 24. The reason the right side is not simply a decoy. Olise holds the width, takes the ball in one-on-one situations and has 25 caps at 24 — the profile France have historically struggled to produce twice in the same generation. If Mbappé is the player the defence is built to stop, Olise is the player they forget about while they are doing it.
And then the rest of the supply line. Rayan Cherki (23) is the alternative creator between the lines, most useful precisely when a defence has already dropped deep. Ousmane Dembélé (67 caps) is the second forward who can win a one-on-one from a standing start, which is what stops opponents committing two defenders to the captain all match. Bradley Barcola is the direct option when the game needs stretching rather than unlocking.

What to watch on that map is the space either side of the holder. France's threat comes from the two advanced midfielders receiving in the half-spaces — the corridors between the winger and the centre-back — and from the wide players holding their width until the ball arrives. When that structure holds, the centre-forward gets the ball 25 metres from goal with the defence turned. When it breaks, the passes go sideways in front of a set defence and the whole team looks slower than it is.

Ages and heights are as of 26 September 2026; caps are as listed at the 18 September 2026 squad announcement. Watch points are ours, based on how the squad is built — not on results.
What Zidane actually changed: five debuts and one hole
The most visible change is in the list rather than the tactics. Five players were called up for the first time: goalkeeper Guillaume Restes, defenders Jérémy Jacquet and Andy Diouf, midfielder Lucas Da Cunha and forward Esteban Lepaul. Two of them arrive with a specific story attached — Lepaul (26) was Ligue 1's leading scorer last season with 21 goals, and Da Cunha (25) captains his club side — which is the pattern of this squad: the new names are not projects, they are players who have already been the best at something.
The other half of a squad announcement is who is missing, and here the omissions are as instructive as the inclusions. William Saliba is unavailable through injury, and the players left out entirely include Aurélien Tchouaméni, Marcus Thuram, N'Golo Kanté, Malo Gusto and Jean-Philippe Mateta.
For a squad with this much attacking talent, leaving out a first-choice centre-forward and a first-choice holding midfielder is the clearest statement of intent available: the team will be built around the players who are fit and available now, not around reputations. It also explains the one genuine weakness in the list. With Tchouaméni out, France have a single senior holder, Adrien Rabiot — the oldest outfielder in the squad at 31 and the only midfielder over 25 — and everything else in the middle is a 20- to 25-year-old who has never had to protect a back four for 90 minutes at this level.
The practical consequence for anyone following this team: the names worth learning are not the ones with the most caps. They are the four or five players whose roles are still being defined — Jacquet and Diouf in defence, Da Cunha and Cherki in midfield, Doué in the front line — because that is the window in which a player's position is still moving.
- Won the 1998 World Cup as a France player, and three consecutive European Cups as a club coach
- Appointed in July 2026 and contracted to the 2030 World Cup
- The third member of France's 1998 winning squad to go on and manage the national team
- 106 caps and 66 international goals at 27
- All-time leading scorer in World Cup history, with 22 goals
- Captain since 2023, and retained by the new coaching staff
One number, two eras: the last France No.10 to lift the World Cup is now picking the team that the current No.10 plays in.
Picking a France shirt: four ways people actually buy
France shirts divide cleanly by what you are actually buying: today's shirt with a specific name and number on it, a player-version cut, a vintage shirt that works as clothing, or a gift where the size is a guess. Four shopper profiles, four different right answers.
1. You want the current shirt with a name on the back. Take the 2026-27 home shirt and put the captain's number on it: the Mbappé 10 home shirt is the straightforward answer, and the 7 shirt is the one to buy if you would rather wear the creator than the finisher. Both are fan version / replica cuts — shirt first, name second.
2. You want the player-version feel. Look for a player version in the same design: a lighter, perforated fabric and a closer, more athletic cut — the match shirt is the same colourway with that cut. Sizing is the trap here, and the numbers are on our size guide.
3. You want a shirt that reads as clothing, not kit. Go vintage. A 1992-94 France home shirt — or anything else in our retro collection, including the Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry shirts from the 1998 generation — carries a bigger crest, a looser body and none of the modern panel shapes. There is one more option this window that only exists because of the story above: the current home shirt with Zidane 10 on it.
4. You are buying for a smaller frame, or as a gift where the size is a guess. Women's cuts are tapered, and shoppers who want the classic boxy look usually do better ordering a men's size instead. If the size is a guess the risk is small, and a different name is possible on our custom jersey page — both explained in the questions below.

Below that threshold shipping starts at $5 and never exceeds $50 on a single order, which is the practical reason two shirts in one order usually cost less than two separate ones. Custom nameplate production windows are in the questions below.
One last piece of advice, given how young this squad is: if you are choosing between a current France shirt and a vintage one, buy the vintage if you want something you will still wear in five years, and buy the current one if you want the name of a player whose career you are following right now. The squad list in this guide will look different within two windows; the roles will not.
If you take one thing from this guide, take the order of operations: pick the role you actually enjoy watching, then pick the shirt number that plays it. Squads change every window and names move on, but the roles do not — there is always a holder, always a winger asked to beat his man, and always a young defender whose development quietly decides how brave the team can be.
France squad questions, answered
Who is in the France squad for the 2026-27 Nations League?
France named 23 players on 18 September 2026 for the opening window of the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League: 3 goalkeepers, 8 defenders, 6 midfielders and 6 forwards. Zinedine Zidane is head coach, appointed in July 2026 and under contract to the 2030 World Cup, and Kylian Mbappé remains captain. Five players received their first call-up — goalkeeper Guillaume Restes, defenders Jérémy Jacquet and Andy Diouf, midfielder Lucas Da Cunha and forward Esteban Lepaul. Warren Zaïre-Emery has since withdrawn through injury, with Maghnes Akliouche called up in his place.
Who are the France players to watch right now?
Start with Kylian Mbappé: 106 caps, 66 international goals and the all-time record for World Cup goals with 22, and still the player the attack is arranged around at 27. Then watch the supply line — Ousmane Dembélé (67 caps) and Michael Olise (25 caps at 24) are the two senior creators, with Rayan Cherki and Bradley Barcola as the alternatives. In defence, Ibrahima Konaté and Dayot Upamecano decide how high France can hold their line.
How many caps and goals does Kylian Mbappé have for France?
Mbappé has 106 caps and 66 international goals, and he is 27 years old. He is also the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history with 22 goals, having won the Golden Boot at the 2026 tournament with 10 goals. He has captained France since 2023 and was retained as captain by Zinedine Zidane in his first squad.
Are France shirts a slim fit or a relaxed fit?
Soccer national-team shirts are the slimmest cut we sell, and France shirts are no exception: a fan version or replica shirt sits close to the body, so if you want the looser streetwear look, take one size up. Between two sizes, take the larger one — the only shirts where we say the opposite are hockey jerseys, which are the loosest cut in the shop. Women's cuts are tapered rather than boxy, and shoppers who want the classic straight look usually do better ordering a men's size. On the youth side, Youth XL roughly fits up to 5'6" (168 cm) with a 34–36" chest; above that, move to a men's S. Full chest and body measurements by size are on our size guide.
Can I put my own name and number on a France shirt?
Yes. Nameplates take up to 12 characters (A–Z, 0–9, spaces and hyphens) and are produced in 5–7 business days plus 1–3 days of packing. Custom shirts are final sale unless they arrive damaged or printed incorrectly, so it is worth checking the spelling and the size before you order. Build one on our custom jersey page.
What is the returns policy if the size is wrong?
30-day returns with no restocking fee, and the first size swap is free. Orders leave our warehouse in 1–3 business days and arrive in 7–15 business days with tracking. Shipping to the United States is free on orders over $57; below that it starts at $5 and never exceeds $50 on a single order.
